We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel for all range of readers from youth to old. The story gets started with “Once there lived..” and promises you to take through the enchanting journey of the kingdom of Voulhire and different characters which have a story of their own yet connected to each other.

The story starts with the character Galen and his journey to Voulhire from a land of princes. The plot moves smoothly further and Galen meets Rowan who helps him to understand the business (blacksmith occupation) inherited from his grandfather called Onita Steel. Each chapter brings the new character into the picture such as king of Voulhire, his political foe Medius Maido and as a threat to the kingdom of Voulhire, a group of violent people calls Riva Rohavi. The story also focuses on a suspicious character called Meldorath who is said “dead” but, till half of the novel keeps you guessing is he really dead?

Almost all events in the story start with elaborate details of settings which few readers might find interesting as it will help them to visualize the scene but, I personally found it a little bit overdone and distracting from the main plot of the story. Considering the first book in the series, I felt the introduction or synopsis of the story was missing which could have given the reader a required grip on the plot, instead of the story directly jumps into the introduction of characters which are not immediately co-related. Also while reading it feels like an actual plot is missing or not getting developed properly and characters are not introduced in an appropriate sequence which confuses the reader the most. There are a lot of loose ends to the plot.

The title of the chapters is not very appealing. I also felt a few of the characters like Beth were unnecessarily added in the story. I am considering these characters might be having some action in the second book. There is one more thing I observed in the book that, there are a lot of complicated concepts like for example “Different realms of Caromentis” or “mysterious Cosmos” which are related to the magic part of the plot and author has added them as an introduction for the second installment in the series I guess. These concepts are very complicatedly written which might cause the reader to lose interest in the book. I also felt the story is not concluded properly.

The part which I found interesting or liked most in the novel is the story of character Galen which encouraged me to finish reading this novel. A few of the most interesting lines added by the author like "May you uncover every detail. But don't forget—" he held a finger to my face, "you are the author of your own story!" or the words in a letter from Galen’s grandfather “Keep your head low, but your eyes ahead. Keep your mind on earth, but your heart among the stars. May you never feel shame, and always walk among those who love you.” The attack sequence on Hillport by Ravi Rohavi is enthralling. The editing of the book is very well.

I give 2 out of 4 stars to this novel as I mentioned above the plot of the novel is not articulated properly which leaves the reader confused but there is still some part of the novel where the author has put real efforts hence 2 stars. There are few sexual remarks in the novel hence I won't recommend it to the audience under the age of 18.
